True, this is a group about cyprus. and we are all GREEKS after all.
But Maniatika is a subform of Doric and not Attik-Ionian (Koini/Dhimotiki).

I agree with Marco & Savina on this one, but as it is the Cyprus group & not a discussion about Greek dialects, i think we should start a seperate discussion on the topic as it could be quite interesting to see what people think...

Savina, mayby about Kritika i am mistaken but..The Cretans just like us Maniates are direct descendants of the Dorians, not the Attikan-Ionians in which the Dhimotiki stems from.
Maniatika is a form of Lakonika (Spartiatika), which is doric. Tsakonika and Maniatika are both Doric

Hello to all.My mum was from Cyprus my Dad was from Greece we were all born and bred in Wales UK but we were brought up in the Greek tradition.

Ya so so so wrong about Mani & Kriti Ioannis.
Half my family come frome Kriti & the other half come from Kalamata, but originally from Mani & neither are Doric Greek, they are all variations of Demotiki with an old word here & there sometimes.

Ya just wrong Ioannis.
All modern Greek spoken today are Demotiki & that Katharevousa was an artificial language created to make Greeks speak a more pure form of Greek closer to classical Greek but it failed because it wasn't the natural language of the people but a artificial language.

Fourth NOT all modern dialects come from "koine".
Maniatika, Tsakonika, Kritika and Makedhonitika are sub forms of Doric.

which has been proven not only by their non-mutually intelligibility, but their DORIC grammar and DORIC attributes.

Attic-Ionian (Modern "Koine") - Modern Athenian: "Πίγα εκεί πέρα μακριά να δόσω ένα τσάντα καί ένα τουφέκι στον αδερλφό μου"

Sorry Marcos but you'r mistaken. This map has been by a 5 year old with nothing better to do.
First of all sterea Elladha don't speak a "northern dialect" and neither do Lymnos.
Second the Old Athenian and Maniatika are two different dialect. The Old Athenian is also known as Kathareusouva. Where as the Maniatika is a form of Laconian Doric and is akin to Tsakonika and Kritika.
The "Koine" is a Standardised dialect of Attican and Ionian in an atrempt to unite all Greeks by language rather than having different dialects.
Third Pontiaka is from Ionian which is akin to that of Smryna (smyrni), Moudhania etc.

All modern Greek dialects come from Koine except Tsakonian in north eastern peloponnissos which is the only modern Greek to decend from Doric & not Koine.

Even Pontic Greek decends from Koine but has been heavyly influenced since the 11th centuary by Persian, Turkish & Caucasian languages.
All modern Greek variants decend from Koine which decended from the common Greek of Alexanders empire & was the language of the Byzantine empire & Orthodox Church.

Sorry Ioannis but you are wrong mate.
