Will we live to see the Cyprus Occupation ended? Or The Skopje/FYRM issue resolved???

Cautious optimism on the Cyprus problem
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sees Papandreou’s visit to Turkey as positive and expects a new round of talks on the FYROM name
By Xenia Kounalaki - Kathimerini

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reveals to Kathimerini his special relationship with Greece, which he attributes to this country’s participation in the Korean War on the side of UN forces and to the crucial role Greece is invited to play in the sensitive region of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Ban estimates that the recent diplomatic opening between Turkey and Armenia constitutes a good omen for Greek-Turkish relations and stresses the need for initiation of the second phase of efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, which will include making decisions based on mutual understanding.

As far the issue of the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is concerned, the UN secretary-general argues that the election of a new government in Athens has paved the way for negotiations to restart under the auspices of UN mediator Matthew Nimetz

Is Papandreou the answer or was Antonis Samaras the right man for the job????

Nuke all the muslim scumbags before its to late & they do it to us.
I don't think the Cyprus problem will ever be solved beause there are so many big powerful countries with their own agendas which don't include a free united Cyprus.
I think Cyprus has more chance of being taken over completely by Turkey or maybe the west will create a situation to give them an excuse to take the island over.
I don't think the British have ever liked the fact that they lost Cyprus & with all the problems in the Middle east, i think Cyprus is more valuable to them than it was before.

This is very true Anna.
I fear for the future of our lands, our culture & our Church.
We can all see that through immigration, loss of interest of our own people that Greek culture & Religion is becoming a thing of the past.
The added policies of the USA which favor Turkey at every level are worrying.
I fear that we will not only lose the whole of Cyprus to Islam, but also Thrace, Dodecanese & the North Aegean islands & maybe Macedonia will lose all or part of its territory to the Slavs.
The Greek government has allowed these things to happen & i fear it is now to late to turn things around.

I agree with both Anna & Mina!!!

I really don't have much faith in the future for the Hellenic world...
Every government since the WW2 has been disapointing & the governments since 1974 & the downfall of the Junta have seemed to go out of their way to erode & destroy all that is Hellenic in an attempt to make us more like the French, Italians, Germans or British!!!

So basically, we are-
A small nation, with
A small declining population, with
A weak ineffective government, with
A serious immigration problem, with
The USA, UK, EU & Isreal & Islamic World that is anti-Greek & pro-Turkish...

DOESN'T LOOK TO GOOD!!!

From what i have recently read it looks like the Turks will even give up potential membership in the EU to keep N. Cyprus. With Obama escalating the war in Afghanistan, it's for sure now the illegall Turkish Troops located in N. Cyprus are going nowhere. Now the EU wants Greece to take out the Cross from Schools and Icons from Greek Courts ! Once this happens , the future of Greece will be in peril to say the least. The Greek Orthodox Church in Cyprus is now suing Turkey for the destruction of over 500 churches and Holy sites. Turkey will NEVER pay up even though the Greek Church in Cyprus will win the case.

So true Vegas !!!

The west (USA, UK & EU) will always be pro Turkish, & not just because of Turkeys strategic location, but also because of Turkeys reliability as an ally & our unreliability...

To be honest, our governments since WW2 have always played as a double game...
Greek governments during the Cold War portrayed that they were NATO while running to the Soviets when they couldn't get their own way...
Where as Turkey was very pro west & anti Soviet in the eyes of the west !!!

Now in this era of Islamic fundamentalism, Greece & Cyprus portray that they are part of the western alliance while openly turning a blind eye to Islamic activity & allowing them to launder money via Greek banks...
Where as Turkey is very active in its support for the west against Islamic militants in the eyes of the west !!!

It always seems like our governments are waiting to see who comes out on top so they can jump ships...
Even if that isn't true, it still looks that way !!!

I can understand why the west see's Greece & Cyprus as two faced & untrust worthy because most Greeks don't trust their governments either...
I don't, never have & never will !!!

Like now in Cyprus, the people blame Greece more than Turkey for the 1974 invasion even though the people in Cyprus welcomed the Junta more than any other Greek region or island at the time because they thought they would get Enosis...
When the people in Greece stood up to the Junta & caused its colapse, the Cypriots were mostly still supporting them apart from Makarios & his supporters...

But Makarios initialy supported them until he realised that Enosis meant Cyprus would become just another island like Crete & he would only be Archbishop & not President...

Today in Washington DC Ergodan met with Obama and said Turkey will NEVER remove the troops from N. Cyprus . Talat also said he is against re-opening the ports and air port in N. Cyprus. The head of the EU central Bank put Greece on warning to tighten it's budget or it will face bankruptcy. The riots and anarchists have started up in Greece one year later. Slowly but surely Greece and Greek Cyprus are both being made irrelevant both by western powers and through their own mis -deeds. I'm so disheartened to see these nightmares take place before my very eyes.

Again, so true Vegas !!!

We missed our chance between 1967-74 when the Junta met with the Turks in Thraki near the Evros river...

The Turks offered to recognise Enosis on condition that they could have a base on Cyprus for 50 years like the British have got 2 bases, but Makarios objected...
The Turks also offered any Turkish Cypriots who didn't want to stay in a Greek Cyprus the right to be relocated anywhere in Turkey & to give them compensation...
In return, the Junta offered the same rights & safeguards as the Turks living in Thraki for any Turkish Cypriots who did choose to stay in a Greek Cyprus as long as the Greek minorities & the Greek clergy in Constantinoupoli were also given the same minority rights...

Both sides agreed but Makarios objected & started using his Presidential/Archbishop status to stir up the people who accepted anything he said, not because he was President but because he was Archbishop, so therefore a man of God...

Just think, if that agreement had been ratified, the Turks would be coming to the end of their 50 year lease, an estimated 20-30% of Turkish Cypriots would have relocated according to surveys done at the time, the invasion wouldn't have happened & Cyprus would have been reunited with the mother land !!!

But as i said previously, if our Governments since WW2 had been more active as a western ally instead of always playing the double game, the USA, UK & (Western)Europe wouldn't have been so pro Turkish during the Cold War...

Even though the Junta wasn't a great era in our history, they were very pro west & anti Soviet in the eyes of the USA, UK & (Western) Europe which is why they pushed Turkey into such an agreement concernining Cyprus...

BUT AS THE OLD SAYING GOES !!!
WHAT IF'S & HIND SITE IS A WONDERFUL THING !!!

JUST IMAGINE IF THE HELLENIC DREAM OF ENOSIS HAD COME TRUE !!!

You're right mate.
I didn't know about any negotiations between the Generals or Colonels of the coup & Turkey so I looked it up & found some references to it taking place.
Yes its ashame it wasn't realised & then the whole invasion fiasco wouldn't have happened.
My family was very anti the coup but what you said about most Greek Cypriots supporting the coup untill it all went wrong & the Turks invaded was absolutely right.
Now they all claim that they were against the coup & the coup caused the Turks to invade & forget that it was mostly Greek Cypriots that mass murdered whole villages of Turkish women & children.
It was mostly Turkish Cypriots who also mass murdered many Greek women & children aswell.
Now both Greek & Turkish Cypriots try to portray that they were like brothers & blame mainland Greeks & Turks for everything.
In reality, I bet mainland Greeks & Turks must have been fed up of Cyprus & Cypriots giving them a political headache.

TRUE!!!
I bet mainland Greeks get fed up with Cypriots claiming they are Greek when it suits them & that they are Cypriot when it doesn't...

It was amazing to see how many Cypriots in the UK were supporting the England team & making fun of Greek team in the Euro cup a few years ago, until Greece won it & all of a sudden they aquired Greek flags & were Greek's...

I remember during that world cup how most of them were calling my Father, myself & maybe 5 or 10 others traitors for supporting the Greek team & that we should be supporting the England team because we live in the UK & because the Cyprus team didn't qualify...

Its amazing to see how they say they are Cypriot & not Greek but then use Greek history & historical figures in conversation as their own...

What snakes they are!!!

Now they are all happy because Greece is on the verge of bankruptcy!!!
But who will they go running to next time they have a problem???
Greece, thats who!!!

But not all of us Cypriots are like that!!!

It generally seems to be the Larnaca area that is anti-Hellenic...
The Paphos & Limassol peole & the people who originated from the occuppied north tend to be very pro-Hellenism & the capital Levkosia tends to be a mixture of both...
I watchet the news and it doesn't seem to be finish yet.
